Discovering new cultures and making a difference in the community were the common threads in the recent journey of Lina, Ivan, José and Mattia. Coming from different countries, these four dedicated volunteers spent two productive weeks in Castelvetrano, Sicily, actively supporting our grassroots activities and those of the cooperative “I Locandieri”.

Their stay was a powerful blend of hands-on community service and deep social learning. Throughout the project, the volunteers engaged in:

  • organic farming and youth animation: supporting local sustainable agriculture and organising fun, educational activities for the local children;
  • anti mafia commitment and the social reuse of assets: learning about the history of the region and the highly significant reuse of assets confiscated from organised crime;
  • migration and social inclusion: gaining first-hand insight into the local work with people with a migration background, and into the daily challenges faced by the front line staff of the cooperative.

Strengthening equality, rights and active citizenship across Europe is at the heart of our work, in the framework of the CERV programme, which stands for Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values. By engaging young people in the social reuse of confiscated assets and promoting open dialogue around migration and inclusion, our network continues to foster democratic values, the rule of law and solid international cooperation at grassroots level.
