Revitalising the local area through art

For two weeks, six volunteers from the European Solidarity Corps worked alongside the organisation Il Circo Pace e Bene at the
Magazzino Culturale in Milena, Sicily, taking part in a project focusing on local heritage and community regeneration.

Through non-formal educational activities, the participants explored the history, traditions and spaces of the local area, discovering
places often overlooked by traditional tourist routes. This experience enabled them to reflect on the value of tangible and intangible
heritage and on the role that art and community involvement can play in breathing new life into community spaces.

One of the central aspects of the project was the creation of art installations inspired by local stories and identity. These included a
work dedicated to the women of the community, an installation combining photographs of the area with crochet pieces made by
local women and an art project at an abandoned fountain, designed to enhance a little used space.

The volunteers also helped maintain existing artworks, recognising the importance of care and continuity in community regeneration
processes.

In addition to its project-based activities, the Magazzino Culturale has become a space for meeting, intercultural exchange and
sharing. By living in close contact with the local community, participants have developed creative, interpersonal and intercultural skills,
whilst experiencing the value of active participation and collective work. The experience has demonstrated how the European Solidarity
Corps can foster learning through direct involvement in local communities, using art and cultural heritage as tools for inclusion, dialogue
and social change.
