Volunteering, innovation and care for the local landscape In recent weeks, a group of international volunteers took part in an experience of solidarity and active citizenship in Leivi, near Genoa, contributing to environmental protection and the prevention of climate related risks. Working alongside local professionals, the participants carried out activities in some of the area’s most vulnerable locations, maintaining paths, firebreaks and natural infrastructure that are important for community safety. They also worked on drainage channels and rainwater management systems to improve water flow during heavy rainfall. Particular attention was given to protecting the Ligurian landscape, characterised by traditional terraces supported by dry stone walls. Through restoration work and nature based engineering techniques, the volunteers helped strengthen slopes, preserve this distinctive feature of the area and reduce erosion and hydrogeological risks. The participants also explored sustainable farming practices, experimenting with soilless cultivation systems designed to use natural resources more efficiently and reduce the use of fertile land. They also took part in environmental monitoring activities, helping to install and manage sensors that collect meteorological, hydrological and agro environmental data. This information can help improve understanding of the area and develop more effective prevention strategies. Thanks to collaboration with a local agricultural, social and educational organisation and Leivi Town Council, the international volunteers hosted by IBO Italia made a concrete contribution to the local community, combining environmental protection, i nnovation and active participation. The experience showed how international volunteering can contribute to protecting the local environment and building more resilient and sustainable communities. The initiative was part of the VEIL CORPS project, co funded by the European Union.
